In a beautiful display of community spirit and slow living, the UK Cittaslow town of Aylsham is preparing to launch an engaging new heritage trail on August 1st. Commissioned by the Aylsham Town Council’s Cittaslow committee, the project is designed to encourage families, locals, and visitors to explore the town's historic streets and independent shops at a relaxed pace.
The centerpiece of the initiative is a vibrant, five-foot-tall fibreglass snail. Currently awaiting its official name—which is being chosen by local children through a community vote—the sculpture was hand-painted by local artist Mik Richardson. The artwork beautifully illustrates Aylsham’s rich wool trading history and features iconic local landmarks such as St Michael's Church, the Market Place, and Blickling Hall.
Beyond the centerpiece, the comprehensive trail features 22 unique snail artworks created by local artists and craftspeople. Highlights of the project include:
Permanent Installations: Six smaller snail sculptures carved from stone by celebrated local carver and Royal Designer for Industry (RDI), Teucer Wilson.
Interactive Elements: Snails made from wood and metal, featuring "rubbing post" fixtures specifically designed for children.
Digital Integration: Each snail connects visitors to the town's history through interactive QR codes, sharing unique stories and fascinating local facts.
Developed in collaboration with the Aylsham Heritage Centre and Visit Aylsham, the trail perfectly encapsulates the Cittaslow philosophy: valuing local identity, supporting the local economy, and fostering a deep, engaging connection with the community's heritage.
