The Secretary General of Cittaslow International, Pier Giorgio Oliveti, met today in Wando with the new Mayor of Wando County, Kim Shin, who was elected in June 2026.
The meeting provided an important opportunity to discuss the future development of Cittaslow activities in the area and Wando’s international role as one of the pioneering communities of the movement in Asia and a key reference point for the Korean network.
Mayor Kim Shin expressed his intention to further strengthen Wando’s commitment to promoting Cittaslow values, with a particular focus on sustainability, local identity and the connection between the community and its territory.
A central part of the discussion concerned the establishment of a new international working group dedicated to coastal and maritime Cittaslow communities. The initiative will be presented at the next Cittaslow International Coordinating Committee meeting, scheduled to take place in Luxembourg in November.
The Mayor confirmed Wando’s willingness to participate actively in the project and to take on a coordinating role within the new working group, sharing with the international network the experience gained by the territory through its close relationship with the sea, its islands and coastal communities.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening cooperation between Wando and Cittaslow International and, in collaboration with the Cittaslow Korea National Coordination, developing new initiatives dedicated to sustainability and quality of life in coastal communities.
