"Slow" Projects and Characteristics of the Municipality of Goolwa (Alexandrina)
Environmental Protection and Energy: A dedicated group of environmental volunteers actively maintains and cares for the roadside verges on nearby Hindmarsh Island. The local organization promotes sustainable living practices aimed at reducing the entire community's overall ecological footprint.
Urban Quality and Infrastructure: In close collaboration with the Alexandrina Council, projects are promoted to revitalize and activate public spaces, with a strong emphasis on restoring and utilizing the historic Signal Point district and the wharf area (Goolwa Wharf) as hubs for civic engagement.
Agriculture, Local Products, and Traditions: The community manages a shared garden and a "food forest" to encourage the local cultivation of fruit and vegetables. The "Food and Wine Group" regularly organizes educational workshops to pass on traditional preparation methods, culminating in the annual "Smoke Off" culinary competition—an event celebrating age-old smoking and slow-cooking techniques.
Social Cohesion and Hospitality: Accredited on March 12, 2007, Goolwa holds the title of Australia's first Cittaslow town (and the first anywhere outside Europe). Volunteers are deeply embedded in the social fabric, acting as active ambassadors for major events and institutional partnerships (such as the "A Pipi Installation" art project promoted in collaboration with the United Nations). A "Cittaslow Corner" has also been established—a permanent central hub serving as an information point and welcome center for residents and tourists alike. List of Events
Cittaslow Goolwa Produce and Artisans Market: Held on the second, fourth (and sometimes fifth) Sunday of each month at Jeralde Park. The market employs strict selection criteria to offer exclusively fresh food from the Fleurieu Peninsula, locally grown produce, artisanal dairy products, and eco-friendly handcrafted goods.
At the Wharf: Summer evening gatherings held at Signal Point, designed for relaxed, open-air socializing. These events feature live music from local bands, food stalls, and a volunteer-run bar showcasing exclusively regional wines and beers.
Southern Deadly Fun Run: An inclusive community run—actively supported by Cittaslow volunteers—dedicated to celebrating local Indigenous culture, families, and public health.
SA Wooden Boat Festival and Christmas Pageant: Major community events of regional significance where Cittaslow members provide logistical and organizational support, promoting the preservation of the town's historic maritime heritage and fostering a sense of community belonging.
