"Slow" Projects and Characteristics of the Municipality of Alphen-Chaam

Environmental Protection and Energy: Alphen-Chaam—proud to have been the first Dutch municipality to achieve Cittaslow certification in 2010—is considered the "green lung" of the North Brabant region (Baronie van Breda). The local administration actively protects vast natural landscapes, including woodlands (Chaamse Bossen) and heathlands (Strijbeekse Heide). Environmental policies focus on biodiversity conservation and sustainable rural land management, while simultaneously supporting residents in the energy transition (thermal insulation and solar power) in full compliance with landscape preservation regulations.

Infrastructure, Mobility, and Urban Quality: Urban planning is strictly geared towards preserving the historical and rural identity of its six villages (Alphen, Chaam, Galder, Strijbeek, Ulvenhout AC, and Bavel AC) and resisting intensive urbanization. Sustainable mobility is a cornerstone of the area: the municipality is crisscrossed by an extensive network of cycle routes (*fietsknooppunten*) and unpaved hiking trails, designed to allow exploration of natural areas away from the interference of motorized traffic.

Agriculture, Local Products, and Traditions: The local economy is deeply rooted in agriculture and the promotion of regional Brabant products. The administration encourages short supply chains (*korte ketens*) and "zero-mile" sales, championing farm shops (*boerderijwinkels*) where customers can buy high-quality goods directly from producers—such as asparagus, strawberries, artisanal cheeses, local honey, and meat from extensive farming systems that prioritize animal welfare. Social Cohesion and Participation: The social fabric is built upon a strong sense of solidarity and community belonging (the traditional spirit of good neighborliness). The local administration actively supports the livability of small towns by maintaining essential services, backing multifunctional community hubs, and funding a rich network of local associations that rely largely on citizen commitment and volunteerism.

Hospitality and Slow Tourism: The hospitality model is based on "quiet recreation" (*stille recreatie*) and the warm, characteristic hospitality of the south (*Brabantse gezelligheid*). The municipality discourages mass tourism in favor of low-impact accommodation options, encouraging visitors to stay at small farm campsites, B&Bs in historic farmhouses, and traditional inns set amidst the countryside, offering an experience of relaxation and disconnection from the daily grind.

List of Events

Acht van Chaam (The Chaam Figure-Eight): The municipality's most iconic and famous event. It is a historic professional cycling race—the oldest in the Netherlands after the national championship—traditionally held on the Wednesday following the conclusion of the Tour de France. While it attracts an international audience, it maintains a deep bond with the community, transforming the village into a lively public festival.

Jaarmarkten (Annual Fairs): Traditional annual markets—such as the Alphen agricultural and village fair—that celebrate the area's rural roots. These events serve as a vital showcase for local craftsmanship, folklore traditions, and the tasting of local food and wine products. Nature Excursions and Tours: Throughout the year, events are organized featuring leisurely walks and guided cycling tours through nature reserves (such as tours in the Chaamse Bossen), often combined with educational stops at farms or tasting sessions designed to raise awareness among participants about local flora, fauna, and agricultural culture.
