"Slow" Projects and Characteristics of the Municipality of Peel en Maas
Environmental Protection and Energy: Household waste generation stands at 130 kg per capita, significantly lower than the Dutch national average of 200 kg. The administration promotes recycling through Repair Cafés, collaboration with the "Glow" project, and the disconnection of rainwater drainage from the sewage system. The town hall itself and the Giel Peetershof neighborhood serve as practical models of green building that exceed statutory requirements. Public lighting is being progressively replaced with LED systems equipped with motion sensors. Organic waste and unsold fruit are utilized to produce energy and local spirits, thereby reducing food waste.
Infrastructure, Mobility, and Urban Quality: Active mobility takes precedence over vehicular traffic, thanks to 90 km of cycle paths and advisory lanes, protected home-to-school routes, and secure parking at public transport hubs and weekly markets. Architectural and bureaucratic barriers have been drastically reduced: the municipality provides citizens with access to spatial quality consultants and "village architects" to support private sustainable building initiatives.
Agriculture, Local Products, and Traditions: Short supply chains are encouraged by offering planning provisions for direct sales by agricultural producers and supporting specific local initiatives such as "Ruigveenvarken." Local craftsmanship and identity are promoted through the regional museum, the development of wine labels, and the "LEF (Love, Emotion, Food)" program. Taste education is integrated into primary schools through programs such as "Healthy Primary School" and "Youth with a Healthy Weight." Social Cohesion and Participation: The entire administrative model is founded on grassroots "self-management": individual local communities bear primary responsibility for developing and maintaining their own villages (e.g., Meijel and Koningslust). Welfare policies, based on the concept of "positive health," involve the use of family coaches and the concentration of medical-social centers within community hubs. The integration of people with disabilities and young people into the workforce is supported by the "We make work from work" and "Het Ontdeklab" programs.
Hospitality and Slow Tourism: The area records approximately 500,000 overnight stays annually. Municipal staff undergo training at an in-house academy focused exclusively on hospitality and the "customer experience" for both residents and visitors. The Municipality is an active affiliate of the Limburg Slow Food chapter, collaborates with the "Glow in Europe" sustainability initiative, and maintains interregional exchanges and twinning arrangements with Grevenbroich (Germany), Mondragon (France), and San Sebastian (Spain).
List of Events
Annual Fair and Funfair: Community-gathering events organized directly by the municipal administration.
Community Cultural Events: A packed calendar of socio-cultural initiatives facilitated by the Municipality through the sharing of know-how and targeted subsidies, yet managed entirely by local communities based on self-management principles.
