Visitors will understand why Wando is certified as a cittaslow once they’ve visited Cheongsando Island. Walkways around the stonewalls, a blue sea, and the smiling faces of elder farmers who speak a distinct dialect are characteristic features of the island. The whole island reminds visitors of Corean traditional children's stories. Residents still often say hello to visitors, and treat them like family. They still keep their peculiar burial custom, and traditional farming methods to use cattle to cultivate the flat stone rice. In Cheongsando, visitors can enjoy peace of mind, and look back to the past with nostalgia.
Comments from the inspection team:
Wando will be the best cittaslow. Everything in Wando is beautiful. This includes both the nature and people of Wando. "Haenyeo”, the female divers who harvest abalone, represent an important local cultural asset. The Haenyeo tradition must be preserved.
