The county of Taean is a marine town located in the west coast of Corea, and is about two hours’ driving distance southwest of Seoul. There is the Taeanhaean (Taean Coast) National Park of the beautiful scenery of 559-kilometer ria coast and the excellent marine ecosystem. The county of Taean is considered as a living museum because many treasures are buried in the sea of Taean. The county was an important distribution hub since before the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), and there are the massive amounts of relics from wrecked ships.
A. Chonllipo Arboretum: The county of Taean is famous for the mud flats that are rich in mineral and a good habitat for various marine lives like oysters, baby clams, etc. The community volunteered to keep traditional methods of gathering marine lives to protect the mud flats. The Chonllipo Arboretum is Corea’s first private arboretum constructed by Carl Ferris Miller, a former American naval officer in 1945, and it boasts the greatest collections of the more than 15,600 species of trees and plants. The county of Taean receives lots of attention from ecology experts and professionals as the county is located at 36.9 degrees north latitude, and is the best location where a variety of plants that can grow.
B. Salt Flat: The county of Taean has produced salt in a traditional method for hundreds of years, and is the only area of Jayeom, salt rich in mineral made by boiling sea water. And The county of Taean designed “Ggotdaji,” a co-brand for local products, and the administration and residents make efforts to promote local products like garlic, rice, apples, Jayeom, dried sea cucumbers, peppers, etc.
