The county of Seocheon is located in Chungcheongnam-do (South Chungcheong Province) at the western coast of Corea near the county of Taean that joined the Cittaslow International in 2017. Seocheon Wetland has been included in a protection list under the Ramsar Convention, receiving recognition for its ecological and environmental value in 2009, and the wetland size under the preservation list is 15.3 square kilometers while the total wetland size is 71.3 square kilometers. The county is making efforts to formulate policy on the protection of the wetland as well as marine life. The county is rated among the most famous habitats of migratory birds in the country. The county has been a Corea’s hidden treasure box of ecology, history, and culture for a long time, and also preserves the 1,500-year history of Hansan Mosi (ramie fabric), Hansan Sogokju (traditional liquor), and 1,000-year Munheonseowon Confucian Academy.
Slow life with Eco-food
- Seocheon seaweed: Many sunny days, exchanges of salt and fresh water, and fertile flat land in Seocheon provide the best environment for cultivating seaweed. Its market share is 8% nationwide and 95% in Chungnam region.
- Seoryeya Rice: The SamGwang rice is known for its good taste. ‘Heauori batch’ is used in eco- friendly farming to produce this type of rice. Grain is firm, shiny and it tastes good when cooked.
