“Slow” Projects and Characteristics of the Municipality of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val
Year of certification: 2013
Environmental Protection and Energy
Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val’s certification dossier, assessed in October 2012, connected environmental protection with the management of water, energy and waste. Existing measures included separate waste collection, composting promotion and a municipal swimming pool heated through solar energy and wood. Public lighting was undergoing progressive modernisation. Further proposals concerned solar panels on a former landfill site, investigation of hydroelectric potential on the Aveyron and improved monitoring of energy consumption. These were development projects at the time of assessment.
Urban Quality and Resilience
The preservation of the medieval centre combines architectural conservation with the continued use of historic buildings. The dossier described protected-area planning, building restoration and housing improvement programmes, alongside studies undertaken with students from the École de Chaillot. The conversion of a former convent for public services was scheduled for 2013. Gardens and small squares contributed to community life, while proposals for the Jardin des Tanneries and riverside public spaces aimed to connect heritage, planting and everyday use. The municipality currently identifies the village as a Site Patrimonial Remarquable.
Slow Mobility
Walking is central to the discovery and everyday use of the historic centre. The certification dossier documented seasonal pedestrian areas, reduced vehicle speeds, parking outside the medieval core and safer connections near schools. Walking routes developed by the Amis du Vieux Saint-Antonin extended this approach into the surrounding countryside. Improvements to cycling connections along the Aveyron, bicycle parking, carpooling and transport on demand were identified as initiatives in progress or proposals. Accessibility work sought to improve movement through a historic environment where adaptations require particular care.
Agriculture, Local Products, and Traditions
The Sunday market connects the village with local farmers, organic producers and regional food. The dossier recorded cooperation with producer networks, support for short supply chains and the use of local and organic ingredients in school and care catering. Shared gardening included a site with fifteen plots and links with educational gardens. Traditional skills were also explored through research into tanning, weaving and walnut oil production. In 2013, a project to revive the Saint-Antonin plum was presented through Jardin Noble Val and Cittaslow Sunday, linking fruit conservation with local food culture and opportunities for producers and restaurateurs.
Social Cohesion and Health Services
Community organisations and local services support families, older residents and people experiencing difficulties. The certification dossier described home assistance, childcare, youth leisure activities, medical services and cooperation with organisations providing food aid and second-hand goods. Accessibility initiatives included progressively adapting streets and public buildings, providing audioguides and developing material with Braille et Culture. Public internet access at the media library and public services centre helped residents use digital resources. Support for associations formed part of the municipality’s approach to maintaining community life.
Slow Tourism and Hospitality
Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val connects its historic streets with the rivers, gorges and landscapes surrounding the village. The dossier documented walking maps, guided visits in French and English, audioguides and short hiking routes. Tourism professionals participated in training on heritage, biodiversity, landscapes and sustainable tourism through Pays Midi-Quercy. Proposed developments included interpretation routes, information on historic buildings and additional translated material. The Cittaslow application itself involved discussion of the charter through municipal and wider community meetings.
