"Slow" Projects and Characteristics of the Municipality of Orvieto
Environmental Protection and Energy: The Municipality operates four mobile air quality monitoring systems (adopted in 2005). Regarding waste management, a recycling and collection center was established in Bardano (2003/2004), alongside a door-to-door collection system using color-coded biodegradable bags. A biomass composting project targeting restaurants, local businesses, and artisans is currently underway. On the energy front, large-scale solar panel arrays have been installed on the roofs of the Orvieto Scalo school, the Majorana High School in Ciconia, and the La Svolta indoor swimming pool. The municipality enforces a "GMO-free" policy, banning the use of genetically modified seeds within its territory, and promotes water conservation through a "Water Charter" (a ten-point guide) distributed to families and schools via brochures.
Urban Quality and Resilience: The administration has reduced light pollution by adopting new ground-facing LED technologies for public lighting. Since 2004, the urban planning department has provided bio-architecture consulting services to private citizens and professionals. To protect the visual landscape, the number and size of tourist signs in the historic center were reduced in 2006, and between 2004 and 2008, many overhead power lines were buried underground alongside fiber-optic cables. New green spaces (in Ciconia, Sferracavallo, Scalo, etc.) are planted exclusively with native tree and plant species. Agriculture, Local Products, and Traditions: Over the decade in question, quality labels were applied to various agri-food and traditional products, including: Orvieto ham, *coppa di testa* (head cheese), *capocollo* (cured pork neck), the Monteleone d'Orvieto pear, *cardo gobbo* (humpback cardoon), high-quality meat, and extra virgin olive oil. Since 2003, the "Cittaslow/Slow Food/Il Palazzo del Gusto" project has introduced local organic foods and traditional recipes into school canteens (serving over 2,000 meals a day). Weekly markets—held in Piazza Fracassini (featuring fair-trade and organic goods) and Piazza del Popolo—reserve specific spaces for small-scale, seasonal local producers.
Slow Tourism and Hospitality: In 2009, a new tourist information office opened at the funicular terminus (Piazza Cahen)—complementing the main office in Piazza Duomo—designed to distribute and channel tourist flows in line with the "Cittaslow" philosophy. To support "slow" itineraries, a new 4 km loop trail was inaugurated in 2007 at the base of the Orvieto Cliff (the "Parco Archeologico Orvietano" or PAO), catering to trekking, jogging, and cultural experiences. The tourism offering is rounded out by new brochures focusing on food and wine, as well as bike tours and excursions available through the "www.ilpalazzodelgusto.it" portal. List of Events (Supporting Initiatives)
Efforts to promote and preserve the area's unique character rely on the following cultural and culinary-focused activities:
"Let's Have Fun in the Kitchen" Project: Launched in 2002/2003 at the "Scalza-Signorelli" middle school in Ciconia and supported by the Training Services Center (CSF), this project aims to teach young people how to preserve the recipes, flavors, and tastes of local traditions.
Events for Slow Food Presidia and Terra Madre: Support for the establishment of specific Presidia (such as those for the *Lumachella Orvietana* snail and the Monteleone pear) and the organization of specific activities (e.g., on September 26th) in support of the "Terra Madre Slow Food" project.
Safeguarding Artisanal Crafts: Industry-specific courses and trade fairs aimed at showcasing and promoting historic sectors such as woodworking, goldsmithing, lacemaking, wrought ironwork, and ceramics.
