"Slow" Projects and Characteristics of the Municipality of Gulpen-Wittem
Environmental Protection and Energy: The municipal administration has set the ambitious goal of achieving full climate neutrality by 2030 (by signing the "Klimaatverbond" declaration). Energy efficiency measures began with municipal buildings: the town hall was equipped with 72 solar panels (covering over 12% of its energy needs) and switched to LED lighting, saving approximately 29,500 kWh annually, while an energy-neutral school was built in Mechelen. Waste collection follows the "Diftar" system, providing financial incentives for rigorous material sorting. Biodiversity (including extensive Natura 2000 areas like the Geul Valley) is preserved through the use of sheep flocks to maintain calcareous grasslands, the planting of heritage tall-stem fruit trees, and the adjustment of mowing schedules to support local flora and fauna (including the extremely rare hazel dormouse).
Infrastructure, Mobility, and Urban Quality: The "eCARSHARE" project is currently active, making two fully electric cars available to residents; these can be booked and managed conveniently via an app. To promote cycle tourism, a dense network of charging stations for e-bikes and scooters has been established in collaboration with local hospitality providers. Cross-border "slow mobility" is being enhanced by the "Trambaanfietsroute" cycle path project, which will connect Maastricht to Aachen and the major "Vennbahn" cycle route. Notable among urban redevelopment projects is the center of Gulpen, where work on Looierstraat includes new open stepped areas designed to make the course of the Gulp River visible again. Agriculture, Local Products, and Traditions: There is a strong emphasis on promoting short supply chains; a local brewery applies the "25-mile concept," using water purified by marly soil, local grains, and hops grown in its own hop garden in Reijmerstok. The municipality is piloting innovative agroecology by supporting the "Proeftuin Free Soil" project at the Aldenborgh wine estate, where soil health is restored using the natural microbiology of compost instead of pesticides. To safeguard traditional trades, the administration launched the "Vakwerk" (Timber-framing/Craftsmanship) campaign, sharing the stories of shepherds, traditional builders, wood-fired oven bakers, and millers. Additionally, the "Agroproductie en Leisure Park" (ALP) in Nijswiller is currently under development; it serves as a hub for the artisanal production of cheese, milk, and cider.
Social Cohesion and Participation: Social policies are guided by the "Samen Doen" (Doing Together) vision, which fosters civic participation and self-organization. The municipality funds "Hoeskamers" (community living rooms) in five villages—volunteer-run spaces where young and old gather to play games, read, do crafts, or share meals, thereby combating loneliness. A local first-aid network—comprising approximately 615 volunteers and over 35 AED stations maintained by the municipality—has a significant social impact. Public health initiatives include participation in the JOGG program (Youth with a Healthy Weight) and the "Taalcafé" (Language Café), which facilitates linguistic integration for new residents. List of Events
Hubertusmarkt: A traditional autumn market held annually in November in the heart of Gulpen, focusing on the sale and promotion of local products.
Regional Folk Celebrations: There is a strong tradition of folk culture, with ancient events still being passed down, such as the "Koningsvogelschieten" (Royal Bird Shooting), the raising of the Maypole ("Mei-den halen"), "Gaffelhangen," "Burck Brêane," and numerous religious processions.
Community Festivals: Food, wine, sports, and social events such as the Reijmerstok Open Days ("De Poorten van Reijmerstok"), the "Broodfeest" (Bread Festival), the "Beleefweekend" (Experience Weekend), and the "Avond4daagse" evening walk.
Mill Day and Open Monument Day: Initiatives focused on the town's intangible heritage, featuring the operation of characteristic watermills (such as the Commandeursmolen and Volmolen) and live demonstrations of traditional construction techniques (for example, filling in half-timbered walls).
