"Slow" Projects and Characteristics of the Municipality of Grumes
Environmental Protection and Energy: The mountain area is characterized by extensive forest cover. The waste sorting rate stands at 72% and is managed through an inter-municipal consortium and a mobile collection center, with plans underway for a new, permanent, multi-municipal facility. The Municipality operates two Imhoff-type sewage treatment tanks and is finalizing a project for a phytodepuration plant designed to eliminate pollutant loads. Thermal energy for municipal buildings is supplied by a biomass system (using locally sourced wood chips from forestry residues); this system is currently being expanded to serve 50% of the village. To reduce light pollution, a plan is in progress to replace public lighting with low-energy systems that direct light toward the ground.
Urban Quality and Resilience: An urban renewal plan has been implemented to refurbish the village's arcades and scenic spots, and the Municipality is completing a plan to repurpose public buildings: the alpine summer pasture hut has become a mountain refuge, the cooperative dairy has been transformed into an inn/guesthouse, and the parish hall into a social services center. The entire area is equipped with Wi-Fi coverage.
Agriculture, Local Products, and Traditions: A major land consolidation and reclamation project is underway covering approximately 35 hectares of previously uncultivated land; disease-resistant (interspecific) grape varieties—which require no chemical treatments—are being planted here to launch organic wine production. Given the local tradition of home gardening, the administration promotes refresher courses to refine organic gardening practices. Timber production is PEFC-certified.
Slow Tourism and Hospitality: Grumes’ tourism offering centers largely on "slow" hiking. The area is traversed by renowned long-distance trails (the European E5 Trail and the Sentiero Italia) as well as mapped themed routes (such as the "Botanical Trail" and the "Old Trades" trail). To support tourism, the municipality has opened a summer information office, produced a detailed topographic map, and installed signage and educational panels along the trails to highlight local flora, fauna, and history.
Infrastructure and Services for Citizens: To improve access to services, a barrier-free botanical trail is currently being developed that will also be accessible to the visually impaired. Regarding retail, there is a single consumer cooperative (a branch of the Valle di Cembra Cooperative) that provides home grocery delivery for residents of the outlying *maso* (farmstead) hamlets. Remote working arrangements are currently being implemented following the arrival of fiber-optic internet.
Social Cohesion and Participation: Grumes is described as a village where the "slow" philosophy is innate, lived out "in a completely autonomous and natural way." Community life is vibrant; a home-care service managed by the Valley Community provides strong support to the social fabric and to vulnerable groups. List of Events (Supporting Initiatives)
Promoting and preserving the area's unique character involves a series of cultural and tourism-focused events:
Cultural and Local Events: Activities ranging from amateur theater and local theater seasons to themed summer events that highlight the natural landscape, traditional trades, and education on respecting the mountain environment.
Agricultural Training Courses: Educational workshops for residents focused on promoting organic methods for tending and maintaining historic "urban gardens" located right at their doorsteps.
Food and Wine Events (Upcoming): In conjunction with the development of the *Albergo Diffuso* (scattered hotel) project, gatherings and tastings are being launched—in collaboration with Slow Food—to foster an appreciation for flavors and revive ancient Alpine culinary traditions.
