"Slow City" Projects and Characteristics of Enns
Environmental Protection and Energy: The city monitors air quality using its own measurement system; data is published periodically in the local newspaper and on the municipal notice board. Composting is widespread: 80% of households use the "Green Bin" (a special green waste container), and twice a year, residents can dispose of tree and shrub pruning waste free of charge. The administration promotes alternative energy sources by offering financial support for solar energy use. Furthermore, measures have been implemented to reduce noise pollution (including a noise barrier along the highway and sound-absorbing paving in the historic center) and electromagnetic pollution, by encouraging operators to share signal repeaters and protecting the Old Town from the installation of new antennas. Attention is also paid to street furniture, such as the use of wood-clad waste bins.
Infrastructure, Mobility, and Urban Quality: The transport network is designed to favor sustainable mobility: the city center is fully served by public transport and is easily accessible via well-marked bicycle lanes and pedestrian paths. All public buildings are accessible to people with disabilities. A specific development plan is in place for the historic center, featuring targeted traffic management for goods deliveries and the protection of urban green spaces.
Agriculture, Local Products, and Traditions: Enns participates in the regional "Enjoyment Region" initiative and supports organic farming and direct sales in collaboration with the Chamber of Agriculture. A project for a market hall in the historic center is currently under development, complementing the existing farmers' market. Enns is also proud to host the headquarters of the Gablonzer Association, one of the world's largest associations dedicated to traditional arts and crafts.
Social Cohesion and Participation: The administration promotes well-being and healthy eating through the "Enns is a Healthy City" program, which includes taste education, nutrition courses, and the distribution of healthy snacks in schools. The administration has implemented efficient and flexible citizen services, featuring physical service counters open until 6:00 PM twice a week and a virtual town hall integrated with e-government systems. The social fabric is kept vibrant by numerous associations dedicated to local traditions and the preservation of "inn culture."
Hospitality and Slow Tourism: The city ensures excellent accessibility for visitors, offering approximately 500 parking spaces in and around the historic center to manage visitor flows effectively, alongside well-developed international tourist signage. A dedicated Cittaslow representative works closely with local hospitality businesses to promote a welcoming atmosphere. Demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability, public events organized by the city utilize reusable systems and materials.
List of Events
Farmers' Market: A regular, frequent event held three times a week (Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Friday afternoons); it plays a vital role in supporting short supply chains and encouraging the purchase of traditional local foods. * Traditional Association Events and Must Tastings: Recurring initiatives organized by local associations to keep alive the region's distinctive customs, rural culture, and traditional food and wine heritage.
