Dongyin Township in Matsu is located approximately 100 nautical miles northwest of Keelung on Taiwan’s main island. It is the northernmost township in Taiwan and is known as the “Northern Frontier of the Nation.” Renowned for its magnificent natural scenery and distinctive marine erosion landscapes, Dongyin has undergone spatial and cultural transformations—from a traditional Eastern Fujian fishing village, through the period of military administration, to its development as a tourism-oriented county.
Today, Dongyin’s living culture continues to reflect the characteristics of these different historical periods. Whether in the Eastern Fujian-style architecture established during the fishing village era, the slogans and military installations from the wartime period, or the tourism industry that emerged after its tourism-driven development, the township’s living spaces embody a layered cultural heritage. Through a uniquely integrated settlement pattern, Dongyin has developed distinctive tourism experiences rooted in this shared coexistence of history and culture.
With “livable township” and “quality tourism” as the core of its island development strategy, Dongyin actively promotes the creation of a “Cittaslow brand” as a key approach to sustainable development. By continuously cultivating its island identity and brand concept, Dongyin was awarded the Gold Prize at the Fourth Taiwan Town Branding Awards in 2022. The township remains committed to shaping a distinctive island brand, introducing aesthetics into the community, and building an island defined by aesthetic values.
