"Slow" Projects and Characteristics of the Municipality of Clervaux
Environmental Protection and Energy: A comprehensive energy monitoring system utilizing the ENERCOACH software has driven a 30% reduction in specific municipal greenhouse gas emissions per household since 2013. A local wind farm generating 20.6 MW (approx. 40 million kWh annually) makes the municipality entirely energy-self-sufficient. All newly constructed public and private buildings must comply with "passive house" sustainability standards. To combat light pollution, Clervaux participates in the INTERREG Europe Project NIGHT LIGHT and is implementing a Lighting Master Plan to transition to LED street lighting. The use of pesticides and mineral fertilizers in public parks and on leased agricultural lands is strictly prohibited.
Urban Quality and Resilience: The "Clervaux Town Centre 2030" master plan aims to revitalize the civic center through traffic-calming measures, supported by the planned construction of a bypass road to divert heavy goods vehicles. Urban requalification includes the redesign of Benelux Square with a new two-story car park and the creation of an "Open Air Gallery" alongside the Promenade de la Clerve. Interactive digital i-Girouette signposts and large touchscreens have been installed in the town center to efficiently guide pedestrians and tourists.
Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility: Nationwide, public transport (trains and regional buses) has been completely free since March 2020. Eco-mobility is actively supported by the Vennbahn bicycle underpass, connecting the town center directly to the train and coach stations, alongside the 23.27 km "Jardins à suivre" regional cycling lane. The "VelöViaNorden" initiative promotes the expansion of cycling lanes within towns. The municipality continuously removes architectural barriers from public buildings, churches, and sidewalks to ensure full accessibility for all residents.
Agriculture, Local Products, and Traditions: The regional Academy of Taste ("Ecole du Goût") raises awareness and promotes local food production through educational campaigns. School canteens and the "Maison Relais" follow strict healthy diet principles, preparing fresh meals daily with local ingredients. The Robbesscheier Nature Experience Centre acts as a hub for preserving traditional crafts and working techniques, dedicating specific efforts to maintaining the heritage of the Ardennes cart horses.
Social Cohesion and Hospitality: Integration is formalized by the "Pact of Living Together," providing liaison services to newcomers from over 80 different nationalities, ensuring they are integrated across all 17 towns and villages without forming ethnic enclaves. The "Norden" Youth Centre provides dedicated activity areas and developmental support for young people. Tourist Information Offices in the town center and at the Robbesscheier Park distribute free resources, while new projects like the "Meditation Trail" around the abbey enhance the slow tourism experience.
Event List
Monthly Farmer's Market: Held on the third Thursday of each month at the central market square, providing a direct commercialization space for local food producers.
"Groussbotz" Spring Cleaning: An annual community campaign where local citizens participate in cleaning the environment, with waste disposed of by municipal services.
Seasonal and Traditional Markets: Special markets organized around Easter and Christmas to offer local residents and tourists the opportunity to sample and purchase regional products.
"Together Equal, Together Different" Project: An inclusion initiative leveraging photography to connect disabled and non-disabled youths, managed by the local Youth Centre and a day-care facility.
Cube521 Regional Cultural Centre Events: Continuous organization of cultural programs, concerts, and intergenerational activities in cooperation with local associations and schools.
