Lac-Mégantic Municipality: "Slow" Projects and Features
Environmental Protection and Energy: The Lac-Mégantic administration promotes a robust environmental policy. 95% of the energy used is renewable (hydroelectric), and the municipal sports center is entirely climate-controlled using geothermal energy. The city has adopted greenhouse gas reduction plans, regulations limiting pesticide use, and an incentive program to replace high-water-consumption plumbing fixtures. Furthermore, the entire area is served by waste sorting and recycling services (in place since 1996) and composting programs, supported by a modern local eco-center. The administration also encourages green building through tax credits for structures that meet Novoclimat 2.0 and LEED standards.
Infrastructure, Mobility, and Urban Quality: The city boasts a 15 km network of bicycle paths and actively promotes eco-friendly mobility through electric vehicle charging stations and social media-based carpooling groups. Following the 2013 tragedy, the municipality launched "Réinventer la ville" (Reinventing the City), a massive public consultation on resilience and urban reconstruction that has become a global model. Projects are underway to expand fiber-optic coverage and free Wi-Fi, while an interactive map created by the "Commerce Mégantic" initiative facilitates access to local services. Agriculture, Local Products, and Traditions: The commitment to promoting skilled trades is reflected in the new "Quartier Artisan" (Artisan District), which offers guidance and support for artisan-entrepreneurs, backed by local educational programs focused on stone-cutting techniques, forestry, and maple syrup production. Nutrition and health education are championed by the organization "Granit Action," which encourages healthy lifestyles and advocates for a greater use of organic and locally sourced foods in both public and private dining sectors.
Social Cohesion and Participation: Community life is highly inclusive, supported by a "Family and Senior Citizens Policy" (which includes an "ISO-Family" certification for exemplary local businesses). Noteworthy initiatives with significant social value include "L'Ensoleillée," a community mental health resource, and "Les soupapes de la bonne humeur," a support association for people with disabilities and their families. The city also provides welcome packages for newcomers, featuring a dedicated professional whose role is to facilitate the integration of immigrants.
Hospitality and Slow Tourism: Lac-Mégantic welcomes visitors with a strong emphasis on a relaxed pace, offering walking and cycling paths along the Chaudière River and tranquil spots like "Veterans' Park" on the shores of the lake of the same name. Hospitality services are managed in partnership with the local Chamber of Commerce, which helps businesses deliver high-quality guest experiences and operates modern information centers equipped with interactive kiosks to guide tourists in discovering the region's finest attractions.
List of Events
Path of Time: A fascinating "slow tourism" route in the heart of the city that serves as an open-air exhibition, where visitors can stroll and admire 47 sculptures handcrafted by local artists.
Local Concerts and Art Exhibitions: The city actively supports culture by hosting numerous events, including art exhibitions at the sports center to showcase local talent, musical performances, and a "community piano" (in place since 2016) designed to foster spontaneous social interaction.
Welcome Weekends for Newcomers: Annual events organized specifically for young people aged 18 to 35 moving to the region. These weekends offer a comprehensive introduction to the area, facilitating connections and integration with the local community and potential employers.
