Arnoud Rodenburg: Cittaslow way of life

Ladies and gentlemen, friends and partners of our Cittaslow family:

Today is the last time I will address you as mayor at our international meeting. My position as mayor of Midden-Delfland will officially end on 1 July. For the past eighteen years I have helped build a municipality with a Cittaslow identity – an identity we carefully crafted after reflecting on what kind of a municipality we wanted to become. We identified our mission with the help of 150 representatives from the city council, the local business community and our neighbouring municipalities. Our conclusion was twofold: our landscape has to be protected and the strength of society has to be nurtured by taking the time to reflect on and appreciate their value. This is how we came into contact with Cittaslow. Fourteen years ago, in 2008, we became member 104 in Orvieto. The association has grown considerably since then. Together we share an important mission: to nurture and protect people and their valuable environments by creating a bright future for all. Working with Cittaslow makes you vulnerable, but it is this vulnerability that reveals your honesty and integrity, which is what people, municipalities and governments want.

The spaces we occupy have so many authentic values that can be easily lost in our fast-paced society. Awareness is the key word. As a verb, it means we all have to work hard to make a difference. That is what Cittaslow expects of us: to work hard and improve our environment every day.  The power of shareholders and developers and the lure of big money can be hard for municipalities to resist. While a major building project undoubtedly brings advantages, if it comes at the expense of authentic values, its merits should be questioned. Are we doing the right thing? Does it hurt or help our identity, our DNA? This is a question we should ask ourselves every day in order to preserve who we are. That’s my advice for the future.

The future of our Cittaslow association, of which I’ve had the privilege of being vice-president since 2010. Together we've completed incredible projects and set up our own EGTC. We've gained knowledge and formed new friendships. This is something I look back on fondly. Today is also my last day as a representative of the Dutch network. Another colleague will represent the network with passion and energy at our next meeting. As for me, I plan to embark on new adventures with my wife Mariette by my side – in both the business sector and the government. It is precisely this combination that requires us to join forces; to work together to create a strong society in which people work together. In which the government and entrepreneurs understand each other. In which the arms of citizens are stronger than that of the government. This is the world I want to create. With a full heart and philosophies inspired by Cittaslow. It’s hard to say goodbye to the vice-presidency – a position that allowed me to work closely with Gian Luca Marconi, Stefano Pisani and Mauro Miglorini. A position in which my good friend Pier Giorgio provided me with endless inspiration. Unfortunately, my mayorship has come to an end. But I will take everything we've experienced, learned and done together with me on my new journey. A journey defined by Cittaslow. Cittaslow is more than a project with a beginning and an end. It's a way of life and it always will be. Thank you all very much. I wish every one of you the best of luck. Un abbracio forte!

IT - Discorso per Cittaslow

Signore e signori, amici e amiche della nostra famiglia Cittaslow,

Oggi, per me, è l’ultima volta che partecipo alla nostra assemblea internazionale in funzione di sindaco. Il’1 luglio si conclude il mio mandato e non sarò più sindaco del comune di Midden-Delfland, nei Paesi Bassi.  Durante questi 18 anni ho lavorato per costruire un comune con un’identità Cittaslow. Abbiamo trovato la nostra identità riflettendo in modo approfondito sulla domanda “che tipo di comune siamo, in realtà”? Abbiamo analizzato insieme la nostra missione, con il consiglio comunale, con i comuni vicini, con gli imprenditori, in tutto circa 150 rappresentanti della società. E abbiamo deciso che i valori paesaggistici andavano difesi, coltivando allo stesso tempo la forza della società. Ci siamo presi il tempo necessario per riflettere e apprezzare le qualità. Così siamo entrati in contatto con Cittaslow. Siamo arrivati a Orvieto nel 2008. Siamo diventati membri 14 anni fa, con il numero 104. L’associazione è cresciuta ulteriormente e ha vissuto un ottimo sviluppo. L’associazione dove condividiamo l’obiettivo che ho appena formulato: coltivare l’umanità nel suo prezioso ambiente, proteggerla e offrirle una buona prospettiva per il futuro. Lavorando con Cittaslow ci si mostra vulnerabili, ma proprio questa vulnerabilità dimostra che anche noi abbiamo una storia sincera, che viene dal cuore, e le persone che lavorano per le autorità, i comuni e i governi lo apprezzano.

Lo spazio in cui viviamo ha così tanti valori autentici che è facile perdere in una società frenetica, se non ci si ferma a considerarli in modo consapevole. Tutto ruota intorno alla consapevolezza. Occorre lavorarci sopra. Dobbiamo farlo ogni giorno. È ciò che Cittaslow vuole da noi. Lavorare ogni giorno per il nostro ambiente. Un ambiente che può migliorare un po’ alla volta, giorno dopo giorno. Il potere degli azionisti, dei costruttori e dei soldi in gran quantità è attraente per i comuni. Un bel progetto edile può rappresentare un passo avanti per un comune ma, se va a scapito dei valori di autenticità, bisogna metterci un grande punto di domanda. Stiamo facendo la cosa giusta? Il progetto ci dà qualcosa in più o ci fa perdere una parte della nostra identità, del nostro DNA? Dobbiamo porci questa domanda tutti i giorni, per assicurarci di non perdere il nostro DNA. Questo è il mio suggerimento per il futuro.

Il futuro della nostra associazione Cittaslow. Io ho l’onore di essere il vostro vicepresidente dal 2010. Abbiamo portato avanti dei bei progetti insieme, abbiamo fondato una piattaforma EGTC. Abbiamo sviluppato conoscenza e sono nate delle amicizie. Sono successe tante cose belle, che ricordo con gratitudine. Oggi sono qui per l’ultima volta anche come rappresentante della rete olandese. La prossima volta la rete sarà rappresentata da un mio collega. Con passione ed energia, non ho dubbi. Io mi occuperò di altre cose con Mariette, mia moglie. Un po’ nella vita aziendale, un po’ con le autorità. Perché è proprio in questa combinazione che ritengo necessario unire le forze. Per lavorare davvero verso una società resistente. Dove le persone non lavorano senza incontrarsi. Dove le autorità sono in grado di capire gli imprenditori, e anche gli imprenditori capiscono le autorità. Dove le braccia dei cittadini si dimostrano più forti delle braccia delle autorità. Questo è il mondo che voglio cercare. Con il cuore arricchito dalla nostra filosofia, colmo di Cittaslow. Mi è difficile dire addio al ruolo di vicepresidente. Il ruolo in cui ho potuto lavorare insieme a Gian Luca Marconi, Stefano Pisani e Mauro Migliorini. Il ruolo in cui ho potuto lavorare insieme al mio grande amico Pier Giorgio, che ha continuato a fornirmi ispirazione. Eppure il mio mandato di sindaco è giunto al termine, e così anche questo ruolo. La realtà è questa. Ma tutto ciò che abbiamo vissuto, imparato e fatto insieme, lo porto con me sulla mia nuova strada. Una nuova strada in cui, naturalmente, continuerò a vivere “Cittaslow”. Infatti Cittaslow non è un progetto, con un inizio e una fine. È uno stile di vita. E lo sarà sempre. Moltissime grazie a tutti voi. Vi auguro il meglio. Un abbraccio forte!
