Sebastopol (USA) - October is Honoring Pomo Month


"Batikleteawi" (where the elderberry grows) was the name of the Pomo village located where Sebastopol stands today. For more than 10,000 years, the Pomo made what is now known as the Laguna de Santa Rosa[http://www.lagunadesantarosa.org] their home. They hunted elk, mountain lion and grizzly bear, and feasted on migratory birds, acorns, roots and berries.

The Pomo are known internationally for their intricate baskets, including ceremonial baskets decorated with hummingbird feathers and cooking baskets stitched so finely that they could hold water.

Today the Pomo maintain rich cultural traditions which they share with Sebastopol during the month of October:
