THE FIRST VILLA OF BISCAY

The population that already existed in Balmaseda was named a Villa on 24 January 1199 by Lord of Bortedo, Mr Lope Sánchez de Mena, who acknowledged it as the Fuero of Logroño as the first Villa founded in the Lordship of Biscay.

The cultural and historical heritage of Balmaseda is the result of the many peoples of various origins who have enriched the cultural traditions of this Villa over time by leaving their particular footprints. Many relevant historical events have been reflected in the history of Balmaseda.

Added to this magnificent situation is a rich natural environment: dense forests, an abundance of water courses and veins of iron mineral. The medieval foundries and wood industry are the result of this immense natural wealth.

The town’s prosperous and thriving history is easily evoked when a visitor arrives for the first time. Its inhabitants have always zealously conserved its valuable heritage as an unmistakable identity mark.

Thus, the current urban layout conserves an apparent medieval look with four main longitudinal streets that run parallel to the Cadagua River (Martín Mendia or Bajera, Pió Bermejillo or Camino Real, Correría and de la Cuesta streets) that speaks to the faraway past. They are cut off perpendicularly by cantons with two squares (del Mercado and de los Toros, later known as de los Fueros) situated on each side. Surrounding the town centre are solid walls shaded by the castle which had been blown up by the Carlist troops guarding the Villa from the top of the Polo hill in 1840. The growth of the municipality as of the 19th century required expansion to the outside and, therefore, the walls surrounding Balmaseda were demolished. However, the Historic Centre was largely conserved.

HISTORICAL HERITAGE

Puente Viejo (Old Bridge)

It is the oldest evidence of walled Balmaseda with the ill-shaped turret and no doubt the Villa’s emblematic monument.  It is also known as “Puente de la Muza”.

Balmaseda, the capital of Las Encartaciones, still conserves the same urban look that has been formed over its long history. Its Historical Centre has been declared a Spanish Heritage Site of Cultural Interest under the Monument category.

Medieval Market
At the crossroads of various routes and as a place of passage and, above all, a cultural melting pot, Balmaseda recovers the spirit of the purest medieval tradition for two days.

The medieval market of Balmaseda was first organised in 1999 as part of the celebrations commemorating the Eighth Centennial of its foundation which converted into in the first Villa of Biscay.

The staging and immense following has turned this Medieval Market into a must-see in the Basque Country’s cultural offering.

Our Lady of Carmen Festival

This is the most traditional festival in the Villa.

San Severino Festival
The main event of the festival of San Severino, the Villa’s patron saint, is held on this Saint’s Day, 23rd October.  It consists of an International Putxera Competition. For this important culinary competition, teams and families gather in San Severino Square and the nearby areas to prepare a typical bean stew in very special dishes called putxeras. Its history is connected to the railway: railway workers would make their stews on long journeys in putxeras with the heat from the steam engine. Nowadays, this dish has become a symbol of local artisan work.
