CITTASLOW BEST PRACTICES PRIZE "CHIOCCIOLA ORANGE 2020"

On 29 September 2020 the Panel for the Cittaslow Prize CHIOCCIOLA ORANGE, chaired by Giuseppe Roma, Coordinator of the International Scientific Committee and composed of President Stefano Pisani, Pier Giorgio Oliveti, General Secretary, and Luca Filippetti, Web manager of C.I., met to appraise the projects and videos submitted by Cittaslow towns.

The Committee firstly thanks the contest participants who, despite the difficult situation due to the pandemic, have responded to the annual competition for the Chiocciola Orange.Fifteen Cittaslow from 6 countries presented their projects and initiatives.

Prize evaluation criteria were based on the general rules of the contest, assigning a score from 1 (minimum) to 5 (maximum) on the following six core items. - Improvement of Cittaslow philosophy; - Impact on social innovation;

- Relevance in terms of dissemination in order to share good practices in the network;

- Scale of the project, people involvement and investment.

- Vision of the future.

- Technical and aesthetical values (for videos).

The Panel then chose prize categories, reaching the conclusion that each year a prize should be awarded for the best project presented, to be called “Chiocciola Orange”, and others prizes should be given for the following categories:

- Environmental and Energy policies;

- Policies for hospitality, awareness and training

- Infrastructure policies;

- Agricultural, touristic and artisan policies;

- Quality of urban life policies;

- Social cohesion.

After having carefully examined project documentation, the Panel unanimously agreed to award prizes to the following projects: 

ITALY

Città Sant'Angelo score: 5 - CHIOCCIOLA ORANGE 2020
“Summer 2020 Educational Center”
The project, created after the lockdown period for Covid-19 , gives a response to the gradual return to sociality for children and teenagers. Using the principles of Slow culture and solid pedagogical principles, it redefines the community's relationship with the territory through a series of educational activities as art, theater and creative writing workshops , psychomotor and free play workshops, for young people aged 6 to 17, with particular attention to the inclusion of children with disabilities.
The project is completed by an illustrative video very useful for a repetition of the activities also in other contexts

NETHERLANDS

Vaals score: 3 - Environmental and Energy policies
“Climate Think Tank”
A think tank on climate change was created to promote an effective change in behavior and active participation of citizens to improve the sustainability of the territory. The goal is to implement climate transition increasing awareness and cooperation of residents, farmers and other stakeholders.

Trevi score: 4 - Policies for hospitality, awareness and training
“The olive tree landscape of Trevi”
The project addresses, through various actions, the safeguarding, maintenance and enhancement of the olive grove rural landscape. Events were held in the olive groves, the restoration of ancient structures and paths was promoted, which led to the creation of green equipment for visitors and travelers, with the aim of curbing the abandonment and depopulation of rural areas.

POLAND

Goldap score: 3 - Infrastructure s policies
“Health Resort”
Goldap Health Resort is a structure for treatment in several therapeutic directions (respiratory, cardiological, rheumatological and other diseases) particularly significant in the current critical health situation. The Center focused using local resources, also contributed to increasing the attractiveness for health tourism of the Warmia-Mazury Region.

ITALY

Cisternino score: 4 - Agricultural, touristic and artisan policies
“Valle d’ Itria Slow Food Community for the charcuterie tradition”
The Valle d' Itria is the valley of the trulli, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The project of Cisternino, one of the chief towns of the Valley, has created a Slow Food community aimed at enhancing the artisan tradition in the field of cured meats. By maintaining this ancient tradition, the community guarantees authenticity and promotes the education to the taste of the new generations

Seferihisar score: 4 - Quality of urban life policies
“Peddler Grocery”
The project tends to create a public grocery network with local products specially to support the less affluent population. On the occasion of the lockdown due to Covid-19, a home delivery service was organized for the elderly and people who are lonely or not self-sufficient.

“Challenge Generation Zero Watt”
The importance of the project lies in the declared objective of involving primary school children in an experience of social responsibility, team working and raising the awareness of families on a very important issue for collective life, such as energy saving.
