Ludlow is an historic English market town, close to the border with Wales. It is at the heart of an area known as the Ludlow Marches.
Our town has been described as '...England's finest market town...' and has a great deal to offer visitors and residents. The centre of town includes almost 500 listed buildings, many of which are in daily use as shops, banks and offices into which you will be welcomed. You don't just stand on the street and admire our architecture!
You'll find lots of small, independent businesses on Ludlow's High Street, rather than branches of national chains - shopping in our town, which has a regular market running in the square most days of the week, is a pleasure.
As Ludlow was the first town in Britain to be recognised as a Cittaslow, it has benefited from the publicity it received. It enabled better working between the different tiers of local government so that a review of benches and bus shelters took place, and funding it received contributed amongst other things to a skate park project and a tea party for the elderly.
Cittaslow has now been incorporated as a Community Interest Company with representatives from all sectors of the community. It has been recognised by the new Shropshire Council as the strategic body for Ludlow. It is currently using funding from the Council for a series of economic support projects including Art in Ludlow, which is placing local art in empty shop windows as well as developing an art trail. Other projects include promotion and the establishment of a development trust for the town.
